Came across this old competitor ad in another sub and it jarred loose another memory that I thought I'd pass along. I was with BBY during their expansion phase in the 90's and was part of a store that was in the expansion... and then went to other markets to set up and train newer stores. Part of that expansion was competitive awareness. Due to lack of real online presence, a person or team of people would make daily visits to all competitors with hand-held recorders to check prices/models/stock, or anything special. We then marked down prices to match where needed. There was even a pile of jackets our shoppers could grab to cover up the logo while they shopped. To keep their market, the competitors learned to do the same thing to us. This was the norm for years until the markets started changing. Those competitors began to close. Fretter, Incredible Universe, Highland, Silo, Sun... and more. Of those, I distinctly recall Highland- as I "shopped" them the day...
